Graveside services for Zane Grey "Jam-Up" Hicks, 87, of Farmerville, La. will be held at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at Liberty Hill Cemetery with Bro. Aleck Nyegaard officiating.  Arrangements are under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Mr. Hicks passed away on September 26, 2020 in Farmerville, La.  After serving in the U.S. Army, Zane came back home and began working at Commercial Solvents in Sterlington, La. for over 15 years.  After a neck injury, Zane began the job he loved the most, working for Central American Life Insurance, Kilpatrick Life for over 24 years.  He managed many routes, serving the people throughout Union Parish and was named Agent of the Year many times.  He enjoyed Blue Grass music and played the washtub bass in a local band, entertaining many in the area.

Mr. Zane had a gift for telling stories that would make ears and interests perk immediately upon hearing him speak.  One of his first stories of his life, he rarely shared.  Not being particularly fond of his middle name "Eldo", Zane begged his mother to change it to Grey.  "I got picked on so much that I wasn't about to go through life with that name," he'd laugh.

One of his best stories he'd tell was the time he and Cooter Anderson lit a firecracker on the school bus that was driven by Heyward Taylor.  That action led to The Legend, "Doc" Elliott of giving Zane the option of three days suspension or three licks from Doc's paddle.  Knowing his father's keen skill of wielding a razor strap, he opted for the three licks from The Legend, a decision Zane said he regretted, after the first pop and hearing Doc say, "Just think Hicks, you got two more coming!"

Other stories told were coming in days from plowing, to throwing walnuts, busting car windows, finding his Christmas gift and playing with it before Christmas, Zane had a story for every occasion.  He was a fun loving soul who dressed as Santa for several years on Christmas Eve in order to make rounds in the Salem Community, hoping to excite the neighborhood children.

Zane enjoyed bird hunting, feeding his birds and squirrels, hunting, fishing and visiting with people from all walks of life.  Later in his life, he helped deliver prescriptions for the local Brookshire's Pharmacy, which he enjoyed doing and seeing and visiting customers.  Zane was a member of Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church and was a member of the Cemetery Committee for over 50 years.  His love of chewing King Edward cigars will be a memory most will never forget.  Zane will always have a place in many hearts.

Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by his parents, Otis & Emma Dean Hicks; brothers, J.D. Hicks, Roland "Bo Dick" Hicks, Jessie J. "Logger" Hicks and Rabun Lee "Big Foot" Hicks; sisters, Lunnie "Wild Goose" Anderson and Ila Mae Hampton; and son-in-law, Lawrence John Garrand.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Merle Dean Hicks; daughter, Dianne Hicks Garrand; numerous nieces and nephews whom he thought fondly of and loved very much; his little dog, Kelly; and a host of other family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Terry Hicks, Leonard Hicks, Billy Anderson, Steve Farrar, John Slater, Greg Hicks and John Crow.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. ~ 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist Church.
