Donald Van
Harris
Feb 14, 1939 — Jul 25, 2025
Bernice
Funeral services for Mr. Donald Van Harris, age 86 of Bernice, LA, will be held at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, Jul 29, 2025 at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Bernice, LA, with Bro. Steve Barrett and Bro. Eric Harkins officiating. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville, LA.
Don served in the United States Army. He was stationed at West Point, New York. He was a carpenter by trade, building everything from furniture to cabinets to houses. He dearly loved his family, watching his nine grandchildren grow, and loved and served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with his whole heart as an ordained Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, song soloist, and a true man of God. Don loved to hunt and fish. He went on several mission trips with his church using his amazing carpentry skills to help those in need. He had a servant's heart, helping his family and others with any needs they had.
Don was affectionately called "Crapaw" (given to him by his first grandchild Dara) by several family members, a name he was deeply amused by and proud of. His last four years, he lived in a tiny home that he supervised and helped Todd build, where he was able to enjoy frequent visits from great grandkids that helped with his care and read the Bible to him. Don had a garden and ran the woods and roads on his scooter to go next door to visit or simply do a "drive by" at Tabitha's house.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Willie McKinnely and Margie Nutt Harris; brothers, Roger, Kent, and Jimmy; sisters, Carol, Joyce, and Mary (Cookie); and his nephew, Chris.
He is survived by his two sons, Mike (Sharon) and Todd (Donna Rae); two daughters, Donna (Tommy) and Laura (Dany); nine grandchildren, Dara (Mike), Tabitha, Samantha (Justin), Mason, Shane (Jennifer), Kelsey, Michaela (West), Nikki, and Steffanie (Logan); 12 great grandchildren; former wife, Frances; sister, Tricia (Roddie); brother, Ronnie (Viki); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Harris, Mike Harris, Shane Harris, Noah Kuhnert, Mike Huckabee, Mark Harris, Brian Harris, Chad Evans, Jimmy Harris, Eric Evans, Mike Kuhnert, and Warren Harris.
Special thanks to Mike Huckabee (Rae's brother) for not only physically caring for him daily, but for being a true friend, granddaughter Tabitha who helped in his care and had to rescue him from several of his shenanigans, his former aide Ariel who truly cared and often brought him gifts, the VA Hospital who gave him superior care, Highland ICU and Dee and her team at Heart to Heart Hospice for their care and kindness.
Visitation will be held at 11:00 AM until time of the service at 12:00 PM, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Bernice.
