Obituary

Betty Jean Miller Owens, age 90, quietly passed away at her home August 23, 2022. She was born in Lillie, Louisiana on September 19, 1931 and was a lifelong resident of Union Parish. Her childhood years were on a small farm choosing to spend most of her time outdoors tending to the fields and livestock rather than indoor chores. She was a reputable high school basketball player at Farmerville High. Known by her brothers and sisters as "Hornet" she had a reputation as being a formidable foe.

A mother and housewife most of her married life, she worked a few years in retail sales until retiring to spend family time in the outdoors fishing and deer hunting. She especially enjoyed deer camp socializing with family and friends and hung up her rifle at age 78 when she harvested her last buck.

She cooked wonderful chocolate pies, chicken and dumplings, corn bread, dressing and biscuits. She was a tough competitor playing dominoes but was a pushover at Scrabble even though she was never at a loss to invent new words. She is remembered as a loving, caring, and generous mother and dearly loved her grandkids. She will be sadly missed.

Betty Jean is survived by her son Rick (Joy) Owens, daughter Kay Owens, grandchildren Shannon Buendtner, Matthew (Molly), Mike and Josh (Lacey) Baker, and Elizabeth (Andrew) Brenden, and great grandchildren Darren, Dustin, BJ, and Chris Buendtner, and Dylan, Zoe, Oliver, Layla, and Ashtyn Baker, sister Sondra Bryan, and dozens of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband Billy Joe of 56 years, daughter Pam, parents Charlie and Marine Miller, brothers Presley, Boyce, Johnny, and Chuck and sisters Eloyce Miller and Floyce Hoeft.

Services will be held at Farrar Funeral Home Chapel in Farmerville Saturday, August 27, 2022 with visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 AM and services at 11:00. Interment will follow at Farmerville City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Shannon Buendtner, Darren Buendtner, Dustin Buendtner, BJ Buendtner, Chris Buendtner, Dylan Baker, Oliver Baker and Mike Baker. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Kerry Anders and staff for many years of medical care, Louisiana Hospice staff especially Nurses Candi Coates and Brandi Canales for their friendship, love and compassion provided during Betty's exended illness. Special appreciation is given to Pastor Ricky Baker for his invaluable friendship, fellowship, and spiritual guidance.
